Hyderabad Wine Club - Meeting Mitchells from Christopher Creek Winery, California 14th February 2007

We had the privilege of spending few hours with Mr. John Michtell and his lovely wife Mrs. Susan Mitchell, former owners of Christopher Creek Winery, in Healdsburg, California on 14th February 2006. www.christophercreek.com.  They are on a round the world trip and wanted to utilize their presence here, to know about Hyderabad’s growing interest in wine culture.  The Mitchells owned the winery from 1988 to 1997 and the present owners Fred and Pam Wasserman continue to keep the wineries original name and tradition of improving their already prize winning wines.

Christopher Creek Winery is nestled in the rolling hills of the Northern part of the Russian River Appellation near Healdsburg, California, where the climate is warmer.  It is a small, family owned winery with a history of producing award-winning, estate bottled and hand crafted wines. They produce 4,500 cases annually of Petite Sirah, Reserve Syrah, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Zinfandel and Viognier.   Their family vineyards consist of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Cabernet.

In addition to growing grapes, they are farming oranges and olives in the Central Valley of California for the past 30 years. Present owners currently live on a Cabernet vineyard in Dry Creek Valley.

Interestingly, far from tasting Wines from Christopher Creek Winery (due to airline restrictions in carrying fluids) or standard wines available in the market, we were fortunate enough to taste some of the exotic fruit and flower wines presented to us by one of the wine enthusiast.  Of course, the Mitchell’s did want to share one of their favorite French Champagnes “Veuve Clicquot” to celebrate the dinner.  The Managers of Mainland China,  Mr. Suprio Benerjee,  Mr. Sagar  Mr.  Prolay, came out with some of the lovely dishes to match these wines.

Being a tropical and fertile region,  and fruits like Banana,  Mango,  Pineapple, Sapota, Sweet lemon,  and Papaya in abundance, it is appropriate that authorities should encourage farmers to adopt this ‘Post-Processing’ of these fruits to exotic wines,  perhaps first as an exclusive export oriented business.  It certainly helps the farmer community in a long way.   Many wineries in Europe, United States, Australia, and Switzerland to name a few proved this to be a profitable avocation.
