  • Now, Roy to export wines to Canada and S America - The Economic Times

MUMBAI: Just when Vijay Mallya-led UB group announced its plans to export Indian wines to France, the UK and New Zealand, a first timer in the business of Indian wines too has revealed plans to export wines made in Maharashtra to overseas markets. Deepak Roy, the one-time blue eyed boy of Vijay Mallya who a couple of years ago was expected to lead the combined spirit business of the UB Group. The wines from Mr Roy’s company Vallee de Vins will be priced Rs 550 and above. Zampa is the name of the first brand by Vallee de Vin.

Speaking to ET Mr Roy said he is planning to export to Canada, South America and Middle East. The wines made from his company Vallee de Vin’s vineyard near Nashik, will be on the retailers shelves by the last week of January 2008. The company plans to roll out 20,000 cases the first year, which is about 10% of the Indian wine market. Mr Roy has invested Rs 10 crore in the wine business. He is also in possession of a vineyard near Nashik.

  • Raise a toast to cheaper, but better wines - The Economic Times

And thanks to incredible Indian excise rules on imported wine, that seem to defy every attempt by the WTO to rein them in, unless you are loaded or working for a liquor company the chances are that you will have to do the toasting in Indian wine.

The good news is that this is no longer going to be as hard or as expensive as it once was. The big breakthrough of 2007, I think, was the amount of fairly drinkable Indian wine that has started coming into the market, some of it even at affordable rates

This is not to say that these grapes are always grown or picked in the right way, but at least the fact that they are genuine wine varietals like shiraz or chenin blanc seems to raise the bar a bit. The prices still tend to be high for the really good stuff, in the Rs600+ range (all prices here are for Mumbai), but decent stuff can also be found in the Rs400-550 range.

  • AP increases the Indian Made Foreign Liquor Tax - TOI

HYDERABAD: In a move to rake in money for its various ongoing welfare and infrastructure projects, the state government on Wednesday hiked the prices of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), including wine and beer, by about 10 to 15 per cent.

But the government is not imposing any additional taxes on these products. Instead, the price hike would happen through an 'additional trade margin'. Though the understanding, according to traders, is that the additional margin would straight away get credited into the government's account, the end-prices of products would be determined only after the dealers start taking deliveries of liquor from the government-run liquor depots.

  • Australian Wines: Toast of the season for India - The Economic Times

SYDNEY: As the festive season kicks in, even hardcore whisky drinkers in India are going for a glass of Australian red.

The fact that wine exports from Australia to India have gone up four times to 1.4 million litres from 360,000 litres just a year ago stands testimony to the fact.

The Indian government's withdrawal of additional customs duty on imported wine this July also helped, Ali Hogarth, regional manager for emerging markets, Australian Wine and Brandy Corp, told media.

"Over the last 12 months to the end of October 2007, bottled wine exports have increased by more than 50 per cent and total wine exports (to India) have quadrupled to more than 1.4 million litres," said Hogarth.

  • Wine adds fizz to Maharashtra’s economy - The Hindu

Wine is adding a new, sparkling fizz to Maharashtra’s economy.

Cottoning on to the heady business potential of wine production and export from Maharashtra, the State Government has uncorked a special policy for wine, becoming the first State in India to have such a policy.

And since then a burgeoning clutch of wine producers have poured in significant oodles of investment in the State’s wine casket, making Maharashtra the nation’s major wine hub.

With wine consumption steadily on the rise in the country and Indian wines finding increasing space on dinner tables abroad, Maharashtra holds out significant potential for new players to join the wine race.

  • 'Liquor on flights will promote local wine industry' - TOI

NEW DELHI: Backing the call by MPs to allow airlines to serve Indian wine and beer on domestic flights, independent MP from Haryana Tarlochan Singh said it was the practice globally. He suggested that the government should allow serving small bottles of Indian brands, and restrict it to maybe one per passenger.

"In the US, domestic airlines take such bottles on a trolley and passengers can pick any one. Allowing it would help promote local wine industry in Maharashtra and other states," said Singh, who was present at the meeting of MPs on Wednesday. A prominent Congress MP is also learnt to be among those who supported the proposal in Rahul Gandhi's presence at the meeting.
