  • Industry attacks India's heavy duties on drink - Business Time Online UK

    The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has complained to Indian officials over the duties levied on imported spirits across India, which it says discriminate against its members' brands. The Scottish industry, which has waged a 20-year battle against India's draconian tariff system, won a verdict against the country at the WTO last year under which central government taxes were lowered to 150 per cent from 550 per cent, but says that ruling is now being flouted by new levies imposed by individual states.

    Globus Wines takes over liquor category of Haiko Supermarket, A division of Hiranandani Constructions, India.

    Globus Wines, Part of Globus Vision Group has taken over Haiko Supermarket’s liquor category and entered into an agreement with Hiranandani Constructions, a leading developer in India to open further such exclusive high-end Wine stores across all its locations in India.

    Since the liberalization of licenses in Maharashtra for Beer and Wine, Haiko was the first supermarket to have opted for retailing of Wines and Beers in the state.

    Speaking from Globus Wines, Karan Jain, CMD and CEO commented ‘’this is in line with our expansion plans to set up high-end retail stores in India. We’re on track to open our 75 stores within the next couple of years. We are extremely thrilled to be associated with Hiranandani Constructions and look forward to offering a wide assortment of Wine and Beers to their community.’’

    Globus Wines is the first wine manufacturing company in India to enter the Wine and Beer retailing business. The first Globus Wines store is already operational at Star Bazaar in Dahisar, Mumbai. Spread across 300 square feet and Haiko will be around 300 sq ft as well.

    Globus Wines had entered the wine business with the launch of Miazma around 14 months ago.
     

    Other Developments: 

    Globus is also tried up with Raheja and Oberoi Constructions both leading developers of India and are setting up wine boutiques in their shopping malls across India. Globus opening 2 boutiques within the next 2 weeks and will be stocking more than 500 types of wines covering various regions including France, Australia, Italy, USA, Argentina, Spanish, Indian and Chilean Wines. Per our understanding, Globus is the first company perhaps in India to be stocking wines so exhaustively. The concentration will be 80% imported wines, 15% Indian wines and 5% Beers. The locations of these 2 boutiques are at Infiniti Mall, Andheri West (Carpet 600sq ft) and Oberoi Mall, Goregaon East, (300 sq ft, Carpet). Other products included in the boutiques are Olive Oil, Olives, Cheeses, Cigarettes and Cigars, Wine Accessories and Paintings.

    Globus is also taking up day licenses to carry out tasting/samplings sessions on week-ends for our walk-ins.

    The Government of Maharashtra has taken an initiative to promote Wine and Beer sales by introducing new licenses called FL BR II. The initiative was taken up in 2006 and so far does not allow the retailer to sell any other types of liquor.

    Monsieur Athanase Fakorellis an award winning wine maker from Bordeaux has been involved with Chateau D'Ori right from inception in 2000. His name features on the back label of the entire range of Chateau D'ori wines he has blended.

    “People desire to graduate to a better lifestyle and wine is a symbol of ‘good life’. Both the Indian wine market and the indigenous wine industry are in their nascent stages, but growing at a phenomenal speed. There is a huge requirement to bring in awareness about wine varietals and wine making.
