    Growing wine in Assam

The weather in upper Assam - warm sunny days and cool nights - mostly moderate weather round the year, seems good for wines.

Do you know a little more about whether wine can be grown here? We own around 400 acres of land within tea estates that is not being used for cultivation at the moment. I want to carry out an experiment to see whether good wine can be grown here.

    Thanks.

     Hi,

Your query is rather interesting...and I for one wish that this can be implemented...am from around the same place and infact i learnt to walk as a toddler at my Mama's T.E...

The problem, I feel, that this initiative will face in this part of the world is the amount of rainfall that we recieve all year round...its hell of a lot and also the soil conditions in the gardens are not the best...its clayey in nature...this leads to surface water retention. This is the last thing that a vine needs as this can be potentially dangerous as too much of water will spoil the roots and make the plants weak and also will hamper the delicate the sugar and acid balance in the grapes...specially during the harvest time...and harvest time would be around april...during the time of the first flush...and we do get rains at that time...dont we???..and also the excessive humidty can lead to rots developing...

All said...i suggest that you could try planting a few vines on an experimental basis to start with...

I hope some more inputs from experienced people in the forum...the likes of Mr. Kewadkar would be highly appreciated...

Hope your vinous efforts bear prime fruit...mur xubhessa thakil...

    Cheers!!! & Regards.
